The full-time program is now accepting applications for fall 2017 (FS17) and spring semester 2018 (SS18).  The online program is now accepting applications for summer semester 2017 (US17).

When you complete the first part of the online graduate school application, you will be given access to the Graduate Education Student Portal. The Portal allows you to check the status of your application, send e-messages to the department, upload various required documents, and request letters of recommendation.

Transcripts
Arrange to have an official, certified, professional school record sent to Michigan State University from the principal or registrar of each school you have attended. The record can also be sent by the Ministry of Education in your country.  Each official transcript must be sent in the original, sealed envelope. Records must contain transcripts with subjects and grades as well as diplomas or degree certificates. The records, diplomas, and/or degree certificates should note the degree earned and date the degree was received.

  • Photocopies or notarized copies are not acceptable.
  • Official translations must be provided when originals are not in English.

APPLICANTS FROM CHINESE UNIVERSITIES—effective in spring of 2014, applicants must have their records verified by the China Academic Degree and Graduate Education Development Center (CDGDC).  The report must be mailed directly from CDGDC to Michigan State University.

The MSMR program will accept uploaded, scanned copies of your academic records when you apply.  However, if you are admitted to the MSMR program, you will then be required to send all original, verified documents to us.

Please have transcript documents mailed to:

GMAT or GRE Scores

English Language Proficiency Test
The ability to understand and communicate English well is essential for all students in Broad master’s programs.  Therefore, proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English are necessary. Strong English language skills must be acquired prior to the beginning of classes.

The English competency tests (TOEFL, IELTS, PTE A, etc.) are designed to give graduate program admissions committees information to judge potential for success. A reasonable level of English competency (reading, listening, speaking, and writing) is important for success in the nationally competitive MSU graduate education environment. Applicants without native fluency in English must fulfill proficiency requirements as part of their admission to the Broad College.

The Broad College requires applicants to provide either a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOFEL) score, International Language Testing System (IELTS) score, or Pearson Test of English Academic (PET A) score. The Admissions Committee will consider a candidate’s highest total score (and the sections associated with the highest score total).

TOEFL:  Test takers should use the Michigan State University institution code 1465 and 02 for the department code. MSU does not accept the Institutional TOEFL- a test taken at any site other than an official testing center and not scored by the TOEFL administration.

Minimum Acceptable Scores (candidates with scores below these minimums might not be accepted into the program)

  • 250 on computer version of the TOEFL exam
  • 100 on iBT (Internet-Based Test) TOEFL exam
  • 7 on the IELTS exam
  • 70 on the PTE

English Language Proficiency Waiver Policy
The English language proficiency requirement may be waived for applicant’s with

  • Bachelor’s degree earned in the U.S. (or other English-speaking country). If a copy of the (old) English language competency scores is available, please send to Admissions. The BA or BS program should be a regular 4-year degree the majority of credits earned in the U.S. (or other English-speaking country), not 100% online, not an “experiential” degree that is based on credit for life experiences and/or not earned at a branch campus in a non-English-speaking country.
  • Bachelor’s degree earned at MSU, the majority of credits earned while on our campus.
  • Master’s degree earned at an AAU institution (see http://www.aau.edu/about/article.aspx?id=5476) on a U.S. campus. Helpful if English language competency scores are included (even if old) for the student’s admission into the master’s program

Two Letters of Recommendation
The letters can be from an academic or professional reference.

The letters may be uploaded online via the Graduate Education Student Portal.  When you receive access to the Portal, you will provide the names and email addresses of your recommenders.  The system will then send the recommender an automated message with directions to upload their letters.

The letters may also be mailed to us at the address listed below.  If the letter is being mailed directly to us, the letter must be written on department or business letterhead stationery, and it must include a Graduate School Recommendation Form.

Academic Statement of Purpose
The statement should describe your career goals and objectives and explain why you believe our master’s program in marketing research will help you achieve those goals and objectives.  This statement should be no longer than two, typed, double-spaced pages.

Resume
Submit a resume highlighting your relevant education, work, and other experiences.

Affidavit of Support and Financial Proof
The Affidavit of Support and Financial Proof is not required at the time of application for admission.  However, many applicants find it convenient to submit this form with their application. Please note that if you are admitted to the MSMR program, you must submit this document within 14 days of admission to obtain your student visa.

Application materials (with the exception of official transcripts) may be uploaded via the Graduate Education Student Portal. Please send hard copy official transcripts, as well as other application materials you do not wish to upload online, to the following address:
